‘I even saw a girl giving a blowjob inside the club once’

By on 28th March 2017

A historic city center, the oldest still working astronomical clock in the world, cheap booze and countless bars and clubs; Prague has it all. And while a trip to this Central European metropole is a once in a lifetime experience as is, you can make it even more memorable with joining one of the many pub crawls plowing through Prague’s extensive nightlife. With a guide on your side your evening can’t go wrong, but who are the people leading all these alcoholic expeditions? That’s what we asked ourselves too, so we asked Felix from Prague’s Drunken Monkey pub crawl organization all about his life as a pub-crawl tour guide.

Hi Felix, can you tell us something about yourself?

“Well, my actual name is Prosper Uyi, but they call me Felix D or Street Commander. I am born in Ede State, Nigeria. After visiting a sibling and a friend of mine in Prague, I decided to move to Prague too. Besides being a pub crawl guide, I sell used cars online.”

How and why did you become a pub crawl guide?

“I became friends with one of the owners of Drunken Monkey, William Barron. I was already going to their bar for drinks and found it an interesting place. One day I decided to talk to him to ask him if I could work there. I started working as a promotor at first and I was good at it. I eventually became a guide because it is more or less part of working at Drunken Monkey, so I was trained to do it. As a local I already knew all the bars and clubs, so that came in quite handy. I’ve been doing it for about five years now.”

What do you like best of your work?

“The best part of my job is just meeting people from all over the world and learning about other cultures.”

It probably is quite a psychically demanding job. How do you keep it up after five years?

“Sure, it’s not a job anyone can handle every night of the week. To be able to do it as long as I have, I take days off. In the winter we can take some more rest, because it is kind of a slow season.”

You can’t always be fun and ready to party, I can image. What kind of personality traits do you need to have, to do this every night?

The most important things are: You need to energetic, tolerant, smart, friendly, social, flexible, and creative and you have to love to part, obviously. But of course, I’m not always in the mood to go crazy. I don’t need to party along with the crawl every night I’m working. In the weekends I do it most of the time, when I have the energy and the mood.”

What does a typical work-day for you look like?

“It depends on whether I was drinking and partying with the crawlers and what day it is. On long nights I’ll go to sleep somewhere between 4 and 8AM and I wake up around noon. On a normal night I’ll go to sleep at 1 or 2AM and I wake up between 8 and 10am.”

Of course your work involves lots of partying and drinking. What is the worst hangover that you’ve had and what happened the night before?

“Haha, hangovers are my worst nightmare since doing this job, but it happened more times than I can count. I’ve had a couple of really bad ones. The one I remember a bit of was when my Aussie friends visited and did the bar crawl. At the end of the crawl we went to a different club called M1. We had a VIP table service with a bottle of Jack (Daniels) and cola and a bottle of vodka with redbull. We also drank some shots. We all got drunk and ended up in a fight somehow. We got kicked out and decided to go to another club, Atelier, which usually closes down at 4.00 AM. I can’t recall what happened there, but I do know I wasn’t able to work or do anything the next day.”

What is the craziest thing that ever happened on one of your bar crawls?

“There are too many to name. Sometimes crawlers get so wasted they fall asleep on the clubs’ toilets, some climb the tables and even the DJ booth in the clubs. Others start shagging in the clubs’ toilet and I even saw a girl giving a blowjob inside the club once.”

Wow. So, where do the craziest people come from then?

“In my experience the Aussies, kiwi’s (people from New Zealand) and some Americans know how to party hard, without making ‘shits’. On the other hand you have the English, Irish, Scottish and some Germans who get way too wasted and that sometimes gets them in trouble. They sing and make a whole lot of noise, they’ll throw up in toilets or inside the clubs, lose their friends and sometimes even start unnecessary fights.”

I have been in Prague myself and I loved it, but what do you think brings all these travelers to the Czech capital?

“Prague is unique in so many ways. It’s one of the cheapest cities in Europe for holidays and it’s well connected to other interesting countries like Austria, Germany, Poland and Hungary. It also has amazing nightlife, it’s safe, the booze and accommodations are cheap and the city has a lot of historical buildings and spots. “

You’ll probably don’t want and can keep up this lifestyle forever. What are your plans for the future and how will your experience at Drunken Monkey help you with that?

“You’re right, I can’t do this forever. I will definitely move to an English speaking country someday and get a normal job or start my own business and raise a family. But to be honest, I don’t know what the future has in store for me. I do know that the job I’m doing right now as made Prague a memorable place for a lot of visitors. I have met strangers who became friends and family. I know people from all over the world and I’m happy doing this. I have no regrets.”
